We love getting feedback from our customers about the different uses they find for our products, and recently we've been hearing about interesting way to use our Insta-Peg Refractory Material.

It is said that "necessity is the mother of invention" and the problem these customers had was that when staining a veneer, inlay, onlay or even a crown it is very difficult to hold the workpiece. Sure there are all types of different devices that are available to help with this problem, but the tool may be too cumbersome, it might not hold the work properly or it might slip from time to time.

So what is the solution? You use Insta-Peg to fill the "inside" of the workpiece, then allow it to dry. In some cases you can speed up the drying by putting some heat to the Insta-Peg material. Once the Insta-Peg dries you have a "holder" that you can get a better grip on, whether in your hands or with a clamping tool. Plus, when the workpiece is ready to be fired you can simply place it on a honeycomb tray and pop it into the furnace.

This is a great trick for all types of restorations, but works especially well with thin veneers as it will provide excellent support, especially during the firing process.

When it comes to pressing all-ceramic restorations the quality of the materials you use to complete the process is not something to cut corners on.

After all the work it takes to get a case, or multiple cases, ready to press the last thing you want is to have a catastrophic failure from using a cheap disposable plunger. The low price can be enticing, but after cracking a few rings because the plunger is too big or having incomplete presses because the plunger is too small, you could quickly be spending more money completing the remakes than you ever would have saved.

Z4 Quick Start Guide

Is your current investment letting you down and you're looking to get started working with N&V's Z4 Universal Investment - well then look no further.

We know that switching to a new product can sometimes be difficult, and the instructions can be lengthy. If you are like us then you probably toss the instructions aside and get right to work. But it's important to remember that to achieve the astounding results Z4 can offer you must follow several key procedures. This is not your old investment, this is Z4, so we've put together a "quick start" guide that will get you moving right along.

Z4 Quick Start Instructions

1) Use a clean, damp bowl
2) Dispense the powder in the bowl first
3) Add liquid second
4) Mix firmly by hand until all powder is wet
5) Vacuum mix for 50 seconds
6) Pour with little to no vibration
7) Bench set for a minimum of 30 seconds for normal size ring, 10 - 15 minutes longer for larger rings (there is no maximum)
8) Put ring in room temperature or preheated burnout furnace and heat soak at end temperature for minimum of 30 minutes (add time for additional rings)
9) Cast or Press
10) Devest

Special Notes:
- Z4 can be poured up and cast any time after then necessary bench set. But do not keep the ring in a bag or re-wet the ring - just toss it in the furnace!
- Scraping the tops of rings is a technique used with ancient investments - Z4 does not require this. In fact do not rough up the tops, put the ring on a model trimmer, scrape it on a model trimmer wheel sitting on the bench or use sandpaper on the tops. Only when using leveler rings with pressable ceramics should the top of the ring be lightly scraped to remove the "nub".

The most important thing to keep in mind is not to over-complicate things. Just follow our quick start guide, check out the instructions for liquid/powder ratios and your casting or pressing results will be better in no time.

In addition to extreme precision and consistency, Z4 Investment can offer your laboratory flexible working procedures, allowing you to take full control of your casting and pressing process.

Z4 excels where other investments fall short, and offers features that no other material can match. One of the key benefits of Z4 is the ability to invest, burnout and cast or press a ring on your own schedule. With Z4 rings can be invested, then remain on the bench for 30 minutes, 30 hours or 30 days before placing it directly into a hot furnace for preheating.

This means no longer do you have to stand over a ring with a timer waiting for the exact moment to place it in the furnace. Or worse, if you wait too long you lose the ability to use the Rapid Cast technique and risk a ring cracking. With Z4 you can invest, then preheat and cast or press at your convenience. Plus, you can invest rings at different times of the day, then preheat them all together when you are ready.

This feature of Z4 not only offers flexibility, but it also enables it to guarantee consistent chemical expansion. When the investment is mixed and the ring is invested the chemical expansion begins. Investments that have a 15 minute bench set require you to place the ring into a hot furnace when it is still hot, damp and the chemical expansion has not yet completed its process. Then when you place the ring in the furnace the heat stops the chemical expansion, and begins the thermal expansion. This can lead to inconsistent results based on the actual amount of time the ring sits on the bench.

With Z4, rings bench set for a minimum of 30 minutes, allowing the chemical expansion to run its entire course and the rings become cool, dry and stable. This means that every ring gets the complete amount of desired chemical expansion, and this leads to more consistent results.

How does it work?

We often get asked how the Permanent Metal Filter found on BK-Medent's M Series Auto-Mixing Porcelain Palettes works, so we thought we would take a moment to offer a quick overview of this exciting feature.

The Permanent Filter can be found on the Ez-Master M, Ez-Single M and the R-Mixing M Auto-Mixing Palettes. The Permanent Filter is made from a space aged metallic material that is designed and treated specifically for use on the M Series Porcelain Palettes. It is manufactured to offer years of trouble free use and will not cause contamination problems, even with constant exposure to moisture, mixing tools and porcelain brushes.

The Permanent Metal filter is placed on top of the absorption paper, which covers the ceramic base. The surface of the Permanent Filter has micro-pores that regulate the liquid and allow the perfect amount to permeate through and automatically moisten the porcelain powders. Since the surface of the Permanent Filter is extremely smooth it will not cause damage to the bristles of porcelain brushes, allowing you to get more life out of your brush.

The filter is durable, and it can easily be cleaned with a steamer or running water. Just be careful to pay special attention when handling the Permanent Filter, as it is very thin and you want to avoid causing creases int he surface. This is only a problem when it is not on the tray. Best of all since the filter will essentially last forever, it reduces the overall cost of owning one of BK-Medent's high performance porcelain palettes.

Shipping Freeze Sensitive Products

Products such as Z4 Expansion Liquid are sensitive to cold temperatures and normally they can not be shipped during the winter - but we realize that even with proper preparation in the fall you might find yourself needing to order these materials.

Learning from years of experience we can typically deliver these types of products, even during the coldest months. So how does Vacalon handle the shipping of these freeze sensitive materials like our N&V Z4 Expansion Liquid?

First, we constantly monitor the weather forecast for the entire country. Every morning we review to decide what areas are safe for shipping and what areas have an "embargo" due to temperatures.

Second, we make sure to take the proper precautions to protect the products during transit. This includes the use of special boxes that help keep the product insulated and keep it from being damaged when the temperatures dip.

Last, and one of the most important steps we take, is maintaining a schedule of what days we can ship freeze sensitive products, making sure we factor in transit time. Our facility is located in Ohio, and depending on your location it can take package anywhere from 1 to 5 days to be delivered to you. One thing we never want to happen is for a package to remain in transit over a weekend. This can be a problem because it could be loaded on a truck on Friday and sit outside the entire weekend in freezing temperatures. This will almost certainly lead to a damaged product.

To make sure this does not happen we will either use an expedited shipping method, such as overnight or two day service, or we will hold the shipment until there is sufficient time for the package to be delivered in the same week it is shipped.

One thing to keep in mind is that when temperatures drop to extreme levels we may not able to ship using a standard ground service. Often times an express shipping option must be used to ensure safe delivery of the product. Another option we use, depending on the order size, is a heated LTL transportation service.

New ProLine Pattern Resin
